If you read the Dish Pick Food Review I wrote on the ribeye steak from Dwayne’s Place Diner & Grill then you know I definitely give Dwayne’s a passing grade on that dish and the grill side of their name.
I love a good country fried steak with all of the fix’ns, and I can’t think of anything more southern-diner style than this dish for my review.
The first thing I noticed when the country fried steak was served was the crispiness of the steak’s flour batter. It was not soggy or too heavy as some I have eaten in the past at other restaurants. Dwayne says their country fried steaks are made to order, and not from a food distributor. “Our country fried steak is choice cut, double cubed, and I guarantee you will love it,” Dwayne said proudly. And he wasn’t kidding. This is one of the best country fried steaks I have ever eaten, and believe me I have had my fair share. Shhh… It was even better than my mama’s.
You know sometimes you can’t put a handle on what makes a dish so good, and what makes the flavor. With this dish I spotted it instantly. Dwayne’s Place just seems to know what they are doing. Once again they know the meat is the star of the show. What makes this dish so good is the seasoning and preparation of the meat. And then they take it a step further and country it all up. The flour batter was not complicated, and it was deep fried, instead of fried with the steak which gave it the crispy texture.
Served with your choice of two sides, I chose the house made mashed potatoes and black-eyed peas simmered in smoked ham. I am not a fan of boring, watery black-eyed peas. Put some ham in and let it simmer for a while, then you are talking. Yum! The country fried steak and mashed potatoes are covered with a milk based white country gravy that is seasoned very simply with pepper and a few secret spices,” said Dwayne.
The meal comes with rolls that you can’t stop eating and house made from scratch real butter cornbread. Not sweet like some.
