DISH PICK: Shrimp & Scallop Orleans at Harry’s Seafood Bar & Grill

With true Louisiana Cajun Tasso cream sauce

I am a creature of habit. In my morning routine, I load up my two labs and cat into my car and we go get coffee and split a blueberry muffin. When I eat at Harry’s Seafood Bar & Grill, a New Orleans style restaurant in downtown Lakeland, I always end up ordering their Jambalaya and Red Beans with Smoke Sausage. My server asked what I would like and I thought to myself, “Jambalaya and Red…, but no, I can’t!” I asked, “What do you suggest?” The recommendation was a confident, Shrimp & Scallop Orleans! It was done.

This dish is listed on Harry’s menu as one of their Signature Dishes, and I understand why. I think I died and went to heaven by way of a New Orleans jazz style funeral! With true Louisiana Cajun Tasso cream sauce over a perfectly fried grit cake, the lightly blackened shrimp and scallops were absolutely delicious. The grit cake was fried perfectly – crispy on the outside and bread consistency on the inside. The Tasso cream sauce is a beautiful blend of Cajun spices with the seasoning of cured and smoked ham that creates a rich flavor that is not too spicy for those who aren’t a fan, but hot and spicy enough to make the dish come alive. 

Tasso is spicy cured and smoked pork. Just like many peasant dishes that have gone mainstream, it used to be made from the trim after a hog butchery where thin strips of meat are heavily seasoned, dried and then smoked for hours. Tasso is the base for many sauces. 

I highly recommend the Shrimp and Scallop Orleans because it was oh, so yummy!
